Penny drive to help Douglas College

Penny drives are popular for elementary schools. Douglas College is counting on one to help an institution of advanced education like itself.

With the penny on the way out of circulation in Canada, the college has teamed up with Coast Capital Savings on a penny drive to raise money for student aid.

The "cent-sible" campaign will have collection sites at Douglas's New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses as well as the Queensborough branch in New West and at Edmonds and Kingsway in Burnaby.

"People are bringing in pennies in jam jars and yogurt containers and some people are including nickels, dimes and quarters as well," said Douglas College Foundation coordinator Tracy Green.

She is hoping enough pennies will be donated for a couple of bursaries for Douglas College students.
