SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM - PDF

SEO Strategies - Optimize Online Press Releases For CRM

In a fiercely competitive online atmosphere, press releases can be a valuable resource for increasing
your company's overall visibility, but only if they're optimized effectively. Remember, this tactic is no
longer just about publicizing your latest news. Instead, it's about creating visibility through multiple
channels that allow you to connect through content, reaching those audience segments that are
relevant to your company and purpose.
When optimized correctly, online press releases can do all of the following:

* Boost Search Engine Rankings for SEO
* Drive Targeted Traffic
* Build Brand Awareness
* Save Money on Pay-Per-Click Campaigns
* Usurp Position From Competition on SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)
Despite these numerous benefits, however, many companies continue to use unoptimized press
releases that don't work as well as they could. Instead, these lazy releases stagnate in Deleted
folders and are never indexed by the major search engines. Remember, this isn't a traditional press
release like Grandma used to write.
Unlike traditional press releases, which were succinct and written with readers in mind, online press
releases need to be more carefully crafted. An online press release (like SEO in general), is half art
and half science - in addition to appealing to readers, they need to be optimized for search engines in
order to drive results. A few simple modifications could increase their effectiveness drastically,
providing far more SEO benefit to your online presence than they would have otherwise.
So how do you write and optimize an online press release that will drive tangible results?
First and foremost, employ common sense and reason. No one wants to read something that isn't
newsworthy, and these type of releases won't garner any publicity. In fact, according to a DM News
survey, 98 percent of journalists are online every day, and almost 75 percent are searching for press
releases. So before you write anything, ask yourself if the story you're thinking about publicizing is
newsworthy. As a member of your industry, whatever that may be, would you take the time to read it?
If not, don't waste your time. Wait for a story that will make a splash and matter to your audience.
Next, identify the keywords your press release will utilize. Align them with the keywords and phrases
you're already optimizing in order to derive the highest SEO benefit. In order to make sure you're
choosing those with the most potential, start with some quick competitive analysis. This can be done
by performing a News search that includes your keyword on Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, or any other
popular search engine.
Looking at the results page, you'll know if this is the right keyword or phrase to chase? How? By the
amount of competition it presents. If you notice that most of the results are spread out over a longer
time span, this keyword is a good opportunity because there clearly isn't as much competition. On the
other hand, if your search turns up ten stories from the past few days, you'll know that this term is

much more competitive due to the many stories you're competing against.
Now that you're aware of the competitive landscape, determine the amount of flexibility you have to
work with. As I mentioned before, if you're attempting to enter a space that's crowded with recent
news, you'll need to focus on a single keyword phrase, while if you have more flexibility, you can
chase several permutations of your keywords.
In the end, it's a better idea to focus on specific online niches, crafting your press release in a way
that you know will appeal to your potential readers. Your press release will be much more potent if it
gets noticed within a specific sector than if it languishes away in relative obscurity, hidden somewhere
in a crowd of similar stories.
This simple research phase can make all the difference in whether your press release gets noticed,
but it's often the most overlooked aspect of this strategy. Don't get trapped milling around in the
virtual crowd - stand out and get noticed by optimizing around the keywords that hold the most
potential.
Once you've completed this critical research step, you will have identified the most potent keywords
with which to write your press release. Now you're finally ready to start writing!
Start with the headline, the most important part of your press release. Include your most competitive
keywords in this headline. While it may be tempting to simply combine all of your keywords, it's
imperative that your headline remains both condensed yet descriptive. Think like a journalist and a
searcher here. Stick to the basics, providing the essential facts and the who, what, where, when, and
why. All of the major search engines start by looking for keywords in headlines, so be sure to give
them what they're looking for in order to capitalize on relevancy. Observe these rules and you'll also
attract those all important human readers.
After you've crafted the headline, it's time to start writing the body of your press release. Begin by
isolating several related phrases to maximize your SEO potential. For example, if you're publicizing
the launch of your new SEO site, your headline may be something like Fusionbox Launches SEO
Microsite.
Don't fall victim to the constraints you'll encounter with the use of just one keyword or phrase. Instead,
use a web of related keyphrases to expand your reach. Alternate permutations like "Fusionbox
Launches Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Microsite," for example, will invariably broaden your
scope and influence. These various combinations allow your release to appear in News results for
these related phrases as well.
Try rotating various combinations of keywords in the body of the release as well to create more
diversity and cover more ground. For example:
"Fusionbox, a Denver SEO agency, recently lauched a new microsite devoted to search engine
optimization (SEO) strategies. The company, which specializes in search engine marketing (SEM),
web design, and web development, needed a unique platform to reach clients looking for optimization
solutions and showcase their SEO services."
Rather than using the same keyword phrase repetitively and sounding like a broken record (which
drives human readers away), this sentence sprinkles other keyword combinations that expand the

SEO value of the release without detracting from readability.
Be creative here. Don't try to overload on keywords or your release won't flow like good writing
should. A good rule of thumb is to write with an eye for your keywords, incorporating them into the
release when natural opportunities appear.
Once you've finished writing your release, read over it again and circle your keywords in red. Does it
sound natural or look like a finished New York Times word search? If so, take a step back and ensure
your work flows while maintaining general SEO copywriting best practices and a healthy keyword
density.
Next, look for instances of your keywords where you could include a backlink to your site. This will
allow you to build valuable incoming links to your site, which are a major determinant of search
engine positioning. Remember to use the full URL in your link if you can't employ anchor text, as this
will ensure your link is indexed and available to search engines and readers alike.
1
Finally, you've finished writing your optimized press release. Now you're ready to begin the
submission process. There are an infinite number of press release sites on the Internet, but some are
far superior to others. Before you go about submitting anywhere and everywhere, make sure the sites
you're submitting content to are crawled by the major search engines, or else you won't get any SEO
benefit from your release.
Many of the more popular distribution services are indexed by Google News, Yahoo News, and
others, but make sure by searching for related stories on these engines and noting where the top
results originate. This way, you'll get a better idea of which distribution channels specific search
engines favor.
Target these for your own release to ensure your content will be visible where it matters, especially as
Universal search [http://running-with-the-bulls-seo.blogspot.com/2007/09/blended-search-changes-
internet.html] rolls onto the scene, showing News links among the regular search results.
As you can see, optimizing your press release is a somewhat complex endeavor. Still, considering
that an optimized release is an essential ingredient to a search engine marketing (SEM) campaign for
its ability to boost search engine rankings, drive targeted traffic, build brand awareness, and even
help you gain digital real estate on the SERPs (search engine results page), the juice is definitely
worth the squeeze.
Just observe the best practices I've described above and you'll build your online presence in this
fiercely competitive online atmosphere where visibility is everything. An optimized press release will
allow you to connect with your target audience through content while deriving tangible SEO benefits.

QOTD: Farewell To The Body-On-Frame SUV? | The Truth About Cars

Pictures of the ?production? version of the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, which looks about the same as the ?concept? version unveiled at Detroit in January. And along with the reveal, another body-on-frame SUV bites the dust.

Having driven the Infiniti JX (essentially, a really nice 2013 Pathfinder), I?m not at all concerned; the Pathfinder has become yet another toddler taxi. The most extreme situations it will ever see is a gravel driveway. This is a ?truck? that needs to compete against the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander ? not to mention the Ford Explorer, which seems to be doing just fine with a unibody layout.

The body-on-frame SUV is a species in decline. Part of it is obviously cost considerations. There are perfectly good car platforms out there that can be used to create perfectly good, car-like crossovers. But how much of it is because these car-based SUVs are competent enough that having a body-on-frame design doesn?t matter? We can throw out arguments about towing, or off-road prowess, but very few of these vehicles will ever be used for those duties, and even then, they are often strong enough to fulfill the 99 percent of owner expectations.

So, my dear readers, here?s my question; how much of the lamenting of the body-on-frame SUV and its apparent superiority is merely cooked up in the hearts and minds of truck fans, longing for a bygone era? Or am I missing the mark?

Military to fill empty seats at London Olympics

Ivan Alvarado / Reuters

Spectators sit among empty seats during the men's Group A volleyball match between Britain and Bulgaria at the London 2012 Olympic Games on Sunday.

By Ian Johnston, NBC News

LONDON - Britain was forced to bring in military personnel at short notice to provide security for the London Olympics -- and has now done the same to help fill thousands of empty seats at several venues despite the massive public demand for tickets.

Many ordinary people who applied for tickets -- in what was essentially a lottery ? missed out and there were numerous complaints about the allocation process.

But the first day saw rows of empty seats at events including swimming, dressage, tennis, gymnastics and volleyball -- according to reports in The Guardian and Telegraph newspapers -- to the outrage of many, including U.K. Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt said the sight of so many empty seats was "very disappointing," according to ITV News. "I was at the Beijing Games, in 2008, and one of the lessons that we took away from that, is that full stadia create the best atmosphere, it's best for the athletes, it's more fun for the spectators, it's been an absolute priority," he added.

London 2012 organizers LOCOG said it was looking into the issue, saying it appeared many of the empty seats were in "accredited seating areas," which are reserved for members of the "Olympic family," such as officials, athletes, their family and friends, journalists, and some corporate sponsors.

From Wimbledon to Wembley Stadium to The Dome, a look at the venues for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

At the daily briefing Sunday, LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe said most venues were "stuffed to the gunnels," but admitted some of the "tens of thousands" of Olympic family members had either not turned up -- on the morning after the Opening Ceremony and associated parties -- or had only gone for a short while before moving on somewhere else.

There was laughter as he was asked about the logistics of "drafting in the army" to fill seats.

"We won't be cancelling leave," Coe quipped, saying military personnel and others, such as local teachers and students, were simply asked if they wanted to see events when there were unfilled seats. Tickets were also being sold to the public, he said.

Coe, who said 75 percent of tickets went to the public, said he did not expect the situation to continue.

Will Mott/@wmottITV

This picture of empty seats at the swimming heats, for which there had been very high demand for tickets, was posted on Twitter by ITV News producer Will Mott.

"I'm pretty sure this is not going to be an issue that we are going to be talking about in three to four days' time," he said, explaining accredited ticket holders would still be "figuring out" what their duties involved, transport arrangements and other logistical issues this early in the Games.

"I do take it seriously. Where we possibly can, we will get people into those seats where and when they are not being used," Coe added.

Twitter was abuzz with pictures of empty seats and criticism of the large areas without spectators at the affected events.

Sally Bercow, wife of the speaker of the House of Commons in the U.K. parliament, said in a message on Twitter that she was ?loving? the Games, but added she was ?so cross at all the empty seats. Sort it out FGS! So unfair for all of us who wanted to go :-/?

'How dare they?'
Comedian Jenny Eclair ?was equally annoyed. ?I've seen enough empty seats in my life without watching the Olympics - tragic waste - how dare they?? she tweeted.

And former British newspaper editor and CNN broadcaster Piers Morgan tweeted that ?These empty corporate sponsor seats at swimming etc are a total bloody disgrace. Sort it out, Lord Coe.?

London protesters decry 'corporate Olympics'

The Guardian said there were an estimated 500 empty seats at the swimming heats featuring Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte; more than 1,000 at the gymnastics morning section, which was supposed to be sold out; and more than 3,500 at the volleyball.

The Telegraph?s report about the issue had more than 1,000 comments from readers.

?I was at the volleyball last night in Earls Court. Virtually all the prime seats right in front of the court were empty. An absolute disgrace and extremely unfair to the competitors who would surely appreciate a crowd of supportive fans to cheer them on,? one reader, kafkander, wrote.

Olympics party: In shadow of Games, London celebrates

?The time to fix it is now. Simply issue a decree that if people are not in their seats by 45 mins before event start time, the seats will be re-let at cut price cash on the door fees ? I would have liked to have gone but couldnt get tickets and/or was disenchanted by all the reports of the Pre Olympic ticket scandals and outrageous pricing,? another, whitevanman, said.

London 2012 Opening Ceremony writer: "Getting the Queen was easy"

Frank Cottrell Boyce, writer of the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, has said that landing a cameo from the Queen was ?easy? compared to other challenges the creative team faced.

The 24 Hour Party People screenwriter spoke of the remarkable ability of the technical team to realize the most outlandish ideas that he, creative director Danny Boyle and the rest of the creative team could come up with.

Speaking to the Guardian, Cottrell Boyce said: ?Some were easy, sending rings into space is just cameras on balloons and the cycling doves are straightforward.

?But the chimneys? Yes, I still don?t know how they pulled that one off. The Queen was easy.?

He said the real problem for the team came from getting clearance for the hundreds of snippets of poetry and songs used throughout the show, noting: ?Most poets and artists were quite cool about letting us use their work, but it costs a lot of time and effort. Every single track and every single quotation needed to be cleared.

?I thought Mary Poppins would be the end of us, I thought no way they?ll get permission to use Mary Poppins!?

The 52-year-old paid tribute to the 10,000 volunteers who helped put on the ?27m ($42.5m) spectacle, saying: ?[They] redefined the nation for me.

?We?re told people need to be paid great sums to get results, but those who are motivated by money cock up. Because they?re crap. People who are motivated by things like love, family, friendship and humanity are the ones who have something to offer.?

The show was watched by an estimated 27m in the UK, and achieved a record number of viewers in the US for a non-US Opening Ceremony.

Dow blows past 13,000 on hope for action in Europe

(AP) ? Faced with Facebook, Starbucks and Angela Merkel, the market chose to focus on Merkel.

For a second day, the U.S. stock market powered higher after European leaders, including German chancellor Merkel, pledged to protect the union of 17 countries that use the euro. The Dow Jones industrial average blew past 13,000, a key psychological marker that it hadn't hit since early May.

It wasn't that there weren't any troubling signs about the economy. In fact, they abounded: U.S. economic growth was anemic in the second quarter. A measure of consumer sentiment fell in July as people worried about their job prospects. And Facebook and Starbucks dropped sharply after reporting disappointing quarterly results.

But on this day, investors homed in on a couple of remarks coming from Europe.

Most notably, Merkel and French president Francois Hollande released a joint statement saying they were "determined to do everything to protect the eurozone." That followed a similar pledge the day before from Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank.

Merkel's statement was closely watched because Germany will have to sign on if any plan to keep the euro countries together is to succeed. As one of the stronger countries, Germany usually foots the bill for bailing out the weaker ones.

For all the rejoicing, a longstanding roadblock remains: Strong countries like Germany want other European nations to agree to cut spending. Weaker countries like Greece are resisting. The statement from Merkel and Hollande made clear that individual countries aren't off the hook, but "must comply with their obligations" ? meaning a showdown over spending cuts is still possible.

"Talk is cheap," said Michael Strauss, chief investment strategist and chief economist at the Commonfund investment firm in Connecticut. "While there's some euphoria over this, at the end of the day, is Spain going to still be in a recession? Yes. Is Greece still going to be in a recession? Yes. So I wouldn't get too carried away."

Others said they were heartened that Europe appeared to be fleshing out more of the details of its plans. Leaders recently agreed that Europe's bailout fund could give money directly to banks, rather than slowing down the process by going through a country's government. Investors also hope that Draghi's remarks mean that Europe's powerful central bank will buy the bonds of distressed countries like Spain and Italy, lowering their borrowing costs.

"In our estimate, this is the first real step in the right direction that Europe has taken in terms of concrete plans," said Mitch Schlesinger, chief investment officer of FBB Capital Partners in Maryland. "Everything to date has been very politically motivated and kicking the can down the road. These are things that actually make a difference."

Jim Millstein, CEO of the Washington, D.C., financial advisory firm Millstein & Co., said investors shouldn't be surprised if any rescue plan takes a long time. The eurozone countries currently function with no real unity on their fiscal policies, even though they use the same currency.

"They are engaged in a very difficult project, which is to transform a monetary union into a fiscal union, and that is a cumbersome process," Millstein said. "It takes longer than the markets might otherwise like."

But the markets liked what they heard Friday. The Dow obliterated the 13,000 mark, climbing 187.73 points to 13,075.66. In two days, it's climbed 400 points.

The Standard & Poor's 500 jumped 25.95 to 1,385.97. The Nasdaq composite index rose 64.84 to 2,958.09.

Bond trading was also a study in optimism. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note jumped to 1.54 percent from 1.44 percent the day before. That means investors are feeling more confident about the economy and more willing to put their money in the stock market instead of low-risk government bonds.

In other positive signs, the euro rose against the dollar, stock indexes moved higher in Europe ? including a 4 percent leap in Spain's benchmark index ? and borrowing costs fell for Italy and Spain.

But there were plenty of red flags for anyone looking for them. The government reported that the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter, a paltry number that likely isn't enough to bring down the unemployment rate. The government also said consumers pulled back on their spending. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment fell in July as people worried about job prospects.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Expedia, the online travel company, jumped 20 percent after blowing past analysts' earnings estimates. A jump in hotel bookings offset a decline in airline ticket revenue. The stock surged $9.19 to $54.90.

? Starbucks fell 9 percent, losing $4.94 to $47.47. Investors were disappointed that the company cut its outlook for the current quarter, and is considering closing unprofitable stores in Europe.

? Facebook fell 12 percent, giving up $3.14 to $23.70. Investors were disappointed that the company, in its first quarterly report since going public, reported a slowdown in revenue growth. It has now lost nearly 38 percent of its value since its initial pricing at $38.

How to Evaluate the Data from your Online Food Journal

A study conducted by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research? followed more than 2,000 dieters for six months and encouraged healthy eating and regular exercise. The results: they found that the single best indicator for dropping weight came down to keeping a food journal.

Two-thirds of all participants who adopted a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and participated in regular exercise, dropped nine pounds or more. But those who kept a daily food diary lost 11 more pounds than those who didn?t.

In order to improve your habits and reach the weight you want, it?s important to take a good, hard look at your eating patterns.

Writing everything down will help you make smarter food choices and provides a more accurate picture of your daily caloric consumption. Researchers have found that Americans typically underestimate their food intake by about 25 percent while overestimating their daily physical activity levels.

You need to track exercise as well because exercise is as important to weight loss as a healthy diet. Research has shown that people who exercise most days of the week can reduce the risk of developing many chronic diseases, including obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and some cancers.

How to evaluate the data to improve your diet

As I dietitian, when I am evaluating a client?s food journal, these are some of the factor?s I look at:

Calories. Did you have an intake at or below your goal?

Carbs. 50% of your calories should come from ?healthy? carbs. Whole grain, fiber-containing, unprocessed.

Protein. 25% of your calories should come from lean protein.

Fat. 25% of your calories should come from ?healthy? fats.

Was the fat contributed by healthy omega 3 fat found in soybean oil, canola oil, walnuts, flaxseed, fish: trout, herring, and salmon? Omega-3s boost heart health, help rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Was the fat contributed by saturated fat found in high-fat cheeses, high-fat cuts of meat, whole-fat milk and cream, butter, cheese, ice cream, palm and coconut oils? Diets high in saturated fat have been linked to chronic disease, specifically, coronary heart disease.

Was the fat contributed by trans-fat from any product that contains partially hydrogenated oil, fried items, savory snacks (like microwave popcorn and chips), frozen pizzas, cake, cookies, pie, margarines and spreads, ready-to-use frosting, and coffee creamers? ?

Was the fat contributed by Omega 6 fatty acids (soybean, sunflower, safflower, corn or cottonseed oil, red meat, poultry, eggs, evening primrose oil)? Excessive levels of certain omega 6 fatty acids, relative to certain omega-3 fatty acids, may increase the probability of a number of diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and some omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. (And arthritis and cancer). A typical American diet has 10-30 times more omega-6 than omega-3 contributing to the rising rate of inflammatory disorders.? A healthy diet contains a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. If your diet is low in omega-3 fats and most of fat from your foods are predominantly omega-6 then you?re essentially fueling an inflammatory factory even though you may be eating the so-called ?healthy? foods. Daily intake recommendations for omega-3s are 0.7-1.6 grams per day and for omega-6s are 7-16 grams per day, depending on age and gender.

Cholesterol. 300 mg is the most you should have per day. Cholesterol is found in animal products: egg yolks, beef, poultry, lamb, pork, organ meats, fish and dairy products. Keep in mind that trans fat and saturated fat have a bigger effect on a person?s blood cholesterol than dietary cholesterol.

Sodium. 2400 mg or less is the goal.

Sugars. 40 grams or less. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to 100 and 150 calories daily for women and men. (12 ounces of regular soda supplies 35 grams; one teaspoon of table sugar contains 4 grams).

Fiber. Goal is 35 grams per day.

Did you get soluble fiber? Soluble fiber attracts water and form a gel, which slows down digestion. Soluble fiber delays the emptying of your stomach and makes you feel full, which helps control weight. Slower stomach emptying may also affect blood sugar levels and have a beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity, which may help control diabetes. Soluble fibers can also help lower LDL (?bad?) blood cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of dietary cholesterol.

Sources of soluble fiber: oatmeal, oat cereal, lentils, apples, oranges, pears, oat bran, strawberries, nuts, flaxseeds, beans, dried peas, chia, blueberries, psyllium, cucumbers, celery, cranberries, grapes, peaches, plums and prunes.

Did you get insoluble fibers are considered gut-healthy fiber because they have a laxative effect and add bulk to the diet, helping prevent constipation. These fibers pass through the gastrointestinal tract relatively intact, and speed up the passage of food and waste through your gut. Insoluble fibers are mainly found in whole grains and vegetables.

Sources of insoluble fiber: whole wheat, whole grains, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, barley, couscous, brown rice, bulgur, zucchini, celery, broccoli, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, dark leafy vegetables, raisins, grapes, corn, fruit, and root vegetable skins.

Did you eat beans? 3-4 times per week use beans instead of meat, add them to salads, soups or use as a side dish.

Did you get at least 2 servings of dairy? Intake of dairy products is linked to improved bone health, reduced risk of osteoporosis, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and with lower blood pressure in adults. It also is a source of protein. For milk, 1 cup of fluid milk; For yogurt, 8 ounces; 2 cups of cottage cheese or half a cup of ricotta cheese; 2 ounces of processed cheese such as an American cheese slice, 1/3 cup of shredded cheese or 1 ? ?ozs. of hard cheese such as cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss and Parmesan.

Was there a lot of ?volume?? Choosing foods that are high in water and fiber and low in density allows dieters to enjoy larger, more satisfying portions, and to lose weight without feeling hungry. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and cooked grains are examples of low-energy-density foods that give you plenty of water and fiber for very few calories.

Did you get 3 servings of whole grains? Do so and enjoy reduced risk of stroke, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, inflammatory disease, colorectal cancer, gum disease, better weight maintenance, and healthier blood pressure.

Madagascar rivals 'to meet again in few days'

Madagascan rivals are due to meet again in a "few days" after their first direct talks ended in the Seychelles without finalising an agreement, the island's ruler Andry Rajoelina said Thursday.

"There will be another meeting in a few days," he told reporters on return from the Seychelles where he met the man he toppled in 2009, Marc Ravalomanana, in talks brokered by the regional bloc SADC.

He said they met twice for several hours over the two days they spent on Desroches Island, a private beach paradise some 230 kilometres (140 miles) from Mahe, the Indian Ocean archipelago's main island.

The first was between the two of them and the second roped in South African President Jacob Zuma, who has been the mediator in the crisis, along with Seychelles President James Michel.

"During the two meetings, the two presidents decided to schedule another meeting. After the second round, in a few days, there will be a follow up at the SADC summit," he said.

The 15-nation Southern African Development Community, which mediated the talks, has set a July 31 deadline for the rivals to settle their differences, so a timetable for elections can be unveiled next week.

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar has been mired in political crisis since Rajoelina ousted Ravalomanana in March 2009 with the army's support.

Nintendo explains how it tests a DS ? Video Games Reviews ...

Having owned several generations of gaming hardware, my Nintendo devices always seem to be the most hard wearing. That comes down to a combination of great design and thorough testing, and Nintendo has decided to share some of the tests it puts hardware through to ensure it wont break in the sweaty hands of a gamer.

As part of the company?s 2012 consumer report, Nintendo has posted seven pictures along with a summary of the tests it carries out on the Nintendo DS. These are sure to be just a few of the multitude of tests the device has to pass, but it does demonstrate how tough the DS has to be.

As you?d expect, Nintendo tests the strengthof the keys with a button striking durability test. The exterior surface is checked for wear with a rubbing test, the hinges are tested for performance by repeatedly opening and closing them, and even the wiring is tested for strength by bending it and checking for stress.

The final test detailed on the actual hardware itself is the drop test. The height of the drop isn?t specified, but based on the image, it looks to be about a meter above the ground.

Nintendo also extends testing to product packaging so as to keep the DS safe during transport. The two tests detailed include vibrating a box full of devices on a vibration plate, probably to simulate transport on a truck and poor road surfaces. These boxes will also be stacked, so Nintendo squashes them with a predetermined force equaling the maximum stack height shipping allows in either a container or vehicle.

Beyond that, Nintendo carries out a number of temperature and humidity tests to ensure heat, cold, and moisture don?t impact the electronics and result in a faulty device.

The hardware used in the tests will never make it to retail. Nintendo will just regularly pick final hardware from the production line and carry out the tests to ensure a high quality product is shipping out.

Gender Games

This is where the IOC?s task starts to seem harder than pulling off a triple twisting Yurchenko. You can see the temptation to rely on the legal classification of an athlete?s sex in her home country rather than going with a universal test. Yet in the knock-down, cheat-prone world of elite sports, some biologically based criteria are surely needed. Here are some distinctions we could fairly draw: People who are chromosomally XX and living as legal women should compete as female Olympic athletics, no matter what their bodies look like and no matter their testosterone levels. Under the current policy, XX-ers with naturally high testosterone could be ineligible to compete as women, and that seems wrong. Some XY-ers should also be deemed women for the purposes of sport, like those with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and many with partial androgen insensitivity syndrome, too. Yes, this last category would entail some hard judgment calls, but at least it?s a smaller group. And rather than a narrow focus on testosterone, a more encompassing algorithm that takes into account chromosomes, genitals, gonads, and hormones seems like the only plausible approach. It?s nice to imagine that a simple test could also be a fair test. But in sports as in life, that?s often just not true.

A Discussion Regarding Internet Marketing | Linux Business Week

An increasing amount of businesses are allocating greater percentages of their promotional budgets to internet marketing. There are many reasons for this. They include the vast number of venues by which someone can promote products online, the high cost of direct mail, the number of people that could be reached via the internet, the overall cost effectiveness of promoting items online, the explosion of social networking, and the increased use of mobile devices by the general population. Each of these aspects will be reviewed further below.

To start, there are many ways to reach below via the internet. One of the most common ones is for a firm to have its own website. It would serve a company well to employ another entity to run the site and to maximize the use of search engine optimization, or SEO, throughout the website. A company can have the best looking website around, but unless it uses the right, targeted keywords to reach customers and make sales, it will not be effective. In addition to websites, firms can purchase online ads on targeted sites and market their products and services on social networking sites.

The high cost of direct mail is yet another reason why firms are increasingly promoting their products online. Between escalating postal rates, high print and mail costs, increased design and paper costs, and more, it is becoming cost prohibitive to promote too much of a business?s resources to direct mail. Direct mail used to be the cornerstone of many business to business marketing programs in years past, but this is increasingly no longer the case.

The large amount of individuals who could be reached via the internet is yet another reason why companies are becoming increasingly reliant on online promotions. Firms could reach people all throughout the day from any continent via a computer. This aspect has completely transformed who companies do business.

Another reason to promote items online is that it is cost effective. This is demonstrated by the earlier point made about how expensive it has become to send out direct mail. While start up costs for a website can be expensive, it is relatively inexpensive to maintain a site once it is in motion, and a member of the company can continually update the content on it to keep everything fresh. On top of this, it is free for firms to start their own pages on social network sites.

The explosion of social networking is yet another reason why internet marketing has taken off as it has in the past few years. These sites have millions of users across the world, and they allow for very targeted marketing. Companies can target people and other firms based on very precise demographic variables.

Last but not least, the general public?s increased use of mobile devices is a reason for companies using internet promotions more in recent years. More and more people, for example, own phones which allow them to access the net any time of day, and it thus makes sense for companies to use more online promotions.

In conclusion, internet marketing has become increasingly prominent in recent years for many reasons. These include the many ways to reach people online, the cost effectiveness of online promotions, the reach allowed by the internet, and the fact that more and more individuals use mobile devices with internet access on them.

The Corner | ABC Newspapers

Legendary Wall Street strategist Barton Biggs was bold and outspoken. He was one of a kind during an era on a Wall Street that doesn?t exist anymore. As a money manager at Morgan Stanley for over 30 years, he would become their first global strategist. He studied creative writing at Yale University and was known for his gifted writing style. On Saturday, June 14, Biggs passed away.

I first came into contact with Biggs in the early 1990s, then already known for predicting the bull market in U.S. stocks that began in 1982 and he warned investors away from the Japanese stock market in 1989 before it collapsed. He would go on to cast in stone his reputation by advising investors to sell high-technology companies as they roared higher during in the late 1990s. Many in the press and within the industry took issue with that forecast only to wish they didn?t by the time the Dotcom Bubble came to an end. Biggs never cared what other firms or analysts thought as he was a true maverick and followed his own instincts.

A colleague of his Stephen Roach stated, ?When I joined Morgan Stanley, we were a U.S.-centric business, and within three years, he [Biggs] said, ?Look, I?m going to step down as U.S. strategist and redefine myself as a global strategist.?

?He was way ahead of the pack in discovering and committing himself personally to being one of Wall Street?s first global investors and global strategists.?

Reminiscing about Biggs, Michael Holland, chairman of New York-based Holland & Company, spoke out, ?I think of a dinner in Rye, New York, at a fancy restaurant with Louis Rukeyser (financial journalist, columnist and commentator) and his wife and Barton Biggs and his wife and my wife and myself as one of the great evenings of entertainment and wisdom that I?ve experienced. He?s left a treasure behind.?

In Institutional Investor magazine?s annual poll, Biggs was voted among the top three U.S. portfolio strategists every year from 1976 to 1984. He and his global asset-allocation team took the top spot in 1998 and 1999. His global equity strategy team was first in 2000 and 2001. In 2003 he retired from Morgan Stanley to found Traxis Partners, a $1.5 billion hedge fund.

Biggs was not infallible as he totally missed the global market meltdown starting in 2007. Opining about the downturn Biggs stated, ?There have been many bear markets that we?ve all lived through, but this has been the most severe and certainly has had the most personal effects on people?s lives. I?m interested as to how hubris and arrogance have destroyed people?s lives and not just the lives of the hedge-fund money managers, but the lives of their wives, children, dogs and everything else.?

Biggs? time at Morgan Stanley was a period when the firm became one of the pre-eminent brokerage and investment banks in the world. For its part, Morgan Stanley traces its heritage to J.P. Morgan & Company after the Glass?Steagall Act of 1933 separated commercial and investment banking. Henry S. Morgan, the son of J.P. Morgan, and Harold Stanley, left J.P. Morgan & Co. and partnered with folks from the old Drexel crowd to form Morgan Stanley at 2 Wall Street. Biggs became managing director and general partner of Morgan Stanley in May 1973. He was their first research director and established Morgan Stanley Investment Management in 1975. He served on their board until 1996.

?He was known as an independent thinker, colorful writer and one of the pioneers of emerging markets investing,? Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman wrote, ?and our firm benefited from his vision.?

Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack said, ?He was totally independent. He thought out of the box and he got people to think out of the box. That?s how I?ll remember him, always as someone who was taking a much broader view or something that others had not thought of.?

While Biggs was no JP Morgan himself, he nevertheless was a giant among giants in this age. What was most striking was the fact that while many Wall Street types hedged their market comments on a daily basis, Biggs told it like it was ?? whether you wanted to hear it or not.

Quote of the week: ?We weren?t geniuses. We were just in the right place at the right time.? ? Barton Biggs (speaking about Morgan Stanley).

Bart Ward is the chief executive officer of Ward & Co. Ltd. an Anoka-based registered investment adviser ? specializing in the management of stock and bond portfolios in companies which are listed on the NYSE.

MLS All-Stars top Chelsea

By DAN GELSTON

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:10 p.m. ET July 25, 2012

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Eddie Johnson scored in the 91st minute to give the Major League Soccer All-Stars a 3-2 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Chris Wondolowski and Chris Pontius also scored goals for the MLS All-Stars at PPL Park, the home of the Philadelphia Union.

Frank Lampard and John Terry scored for Chelsea, the touring English Premier League team, selected to play in the All-Star game.

Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham received the loudest pregame ovation only hours after arriving from London. Beckham, his pink shoes as bright as the lights that lit up the field, was set to head back to London immediately after the game because he has a role in the opening ceremony at the Olympics.

Beckham thrilled the fans when he set up for a free kick, though the ball was headed out. Beckham failed to score on his subsequent corner kick.

For the rest of the All-Stars who aren't London bound, playing just outside Philadelphia was the next best thing. Plus, there was a taste of London outside of PPL Park where the globally popular Blues had a pair of championship trophies stationed in a tent and a line of fans waiting to pose next to them for some pictures.

Fans packed the entertainment area where kids could kick around balls, and everyone from Tony Meola to Freddy Adu signed autographs.

A stadium-record 19,236 fans packed the state-of-the-art stadium nestled on the bank of the Delaware River.

The Sons of Ben, the Union's popular fan club, beat drums and sang songs all game long, then led a rousing ovation when Union defender Carlos Valdes checked in off the bench. They also made a "Landykake" sign in the form of the logo of Philadelphia's popular Tastykake snack line.

The fans also delighted in chanting "your captain is a racist" at Terry. Terry, the Chelsea captain, was acquitted July 13 in London's Westminster Magistrates' Court of charges he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game last October.

D.C United coach Ben Olsen led the MLS All-Stars and saw a familiar scene in the 73rd minute when United teammates Dwayne De Rosario and Pontius connected for the tying goal. De Rosario made a sharp pass to Pontius and he pounded it past Ross Turnbull for the tying score. Pontius was the game's MVP.

Chelsea, in the midst of a U.S. tour, had scored two straight goals to seemingly take control of game.

Lampard scored in the 58th minute when he was open off an arching pass and easily booted the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead. Terry had scored a header in the 32nd minute to make it 1-1.

Wondolowski, the San Jose star who leads MLS with 17 goals, took advantage when Chelsea failed to clear the ball and left an open net for a goal in the 21st minute.

But just when the game appeared on the brink of being decided by penalty kicks, Johnson, of the Seattle Sounders, broke free for the winner and sparked the MLS All-Stars to a win over an international team for the first time since 2008.

The MLS stars celebrated as "Philadelphia Freedom" was blasted through the stadium.

In Canada, do health and life insurance companies require that applicants take a drug test?

I have recently applied for health and life insurance. The nurse will be coming to take tests next week. I am just curious as to what exactly do they test for (ex. cbc, electrolytes, ast, alt, etc) and do they include a drug test.

You can compare quotes from different companies for free at: Usa insurance quotes

The nurse will ask you questions related to your health and get a form filled. A physical test of your height and weight along with samples of urine, blood and salivia if you smoke would be taken. Depending upon the age and other health problems mentioned she might do a Cardiogram.

5 of The Top Healthcare Careers in 2012

CB106274

Opportunities for employment in the health care industry are projected to increase substantially in the coming years. As the ?baby boomer? generation ages, additional home and critical care services will be required to handle the large influx of patients into an already overburdened system. The team approach to health care dictates the need for skilled professionals in many medical and allied health care fields. If you are interested in a career in the health care industry, here is a list of five professions for which the demand continues to increase.

1. Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner

The nursing profession is the mainstay of hospital care and an indispensable part of the health care team. By 2016, hospitals and other health care facilities are expected to need some 580,000 new nurses. Advanced practice nurses?such as nurse practitioners?are also expected to be in great demand, especially in areas that are typically underserved by the medical community. If you are interested in becoming part of a patient care team, you would do well to investigate the nursing profession.

2. Medical Assistant

Medical assistants are in high demand as physician?s offices deal with rapidly growing patient loads. As a medical assistant, you have responsibility for managing the administrative overhead of the physician?s office, and you may assist with minor clinical tasks.

3. Dental Assistant

The dental assistant is indispensable in the practice of dentistry. As a dental assistant, your responsibilities might include taking x-rays, counseling patients, and preparing and maintaining dental instruments.

?4. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic

EMTs and paramedics are critical to any team of first-responders. As cities increase in size and populations continue to grow, the need for timely and expert response to urgent medical problems continues to rise. Given the importance of decreasing the time between injury and response, increasing the number of EMTs and paramedics in the field can have a major impact on the morbidity and mortality of life-threatening emergencies. If you are interested in a demanding and fast-paced career in health care, training as an EMT or paramedic may be something to consider.

5. Physical Therapist

Physical therapists utilize their training and expertise in rehabilitation to assist the recovery of patients who have sustained traumatic injuries, who have become debilitated due to disease, or who have undergone surgical procedures. Physical therapists can be employed in doctors offices, hospitals, and fitness centers. If you enjoy working closely with patients, a career in physical therapy is an excellent choice.

Becoming a part of the health care industry is one of the few relatively recession-proof career choices. There are many fields to choose from and many options to consider. As the population continues to age, the need for health care professionals of all disciplines will continue to grow. Whatever profession you choose, you can be assured of a challenging, rewarding, and meaningful career.

Eva Kwok blogs about careers in healthcare. If you are interested in working in the health sector, you might consider applying for a degree in pharmacy. Several schools offer pharmacy degrees, including University of Florida and Creighton University.
