4 hurt, none gored, in 1st Pamplona bull run

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) ? Several thousand thrill-seekers tested their bravery by dashing alongside six fighting bulls through the streets of the northern Spanish city of Pamplona on the first day of the running of the bulls at the annual San Fermin festival on Sunday.

Despite a large crowd of participants because the run coincided with a weekend, only four people were treated for injuries and no one was gored, officials said.

The regional government of Navarra, which is responsible for organizing the festival, said in a statement that none of the four are seriously injured.

A 24-year-old Australian, whom it identified only by the initials J. C., was being treated for bruising, as was a 44-year-old British national. An American citizen identified only as C.S. was also receiving treatment for a minor injury, as was a 36-year-old native of Pamplona, the statement said.

There was a moment of tension as the last bull of the pack became disoriented and turned around to look back at runners, but it eventually entered the bullring without charging at anyone.

The nine-day fiesta was immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."

"It's tremendous how many people there are here today," said Enrique Maya, mayor of Pamplona.

Every morning of the festival at 8 a.m., six bulls specifically bred for fighting race through the narrow, medieval streets of Pamplona accompanied by an equal number of large steers ? each wearing a clanking cowbell ? tasked with keeping the pack tight and galloping at an even pace.

"It was amazing, phenomenal and scary, all at the same time," said William Schulz, 34, a bartender in Nashville, Tennessee, but originally from Orlando, Florida.

The run covers 930-yards (850-meters) from a holding pen on the edge of town to the central bull ring where the large animals face matadors and almost certain death in afternoon bullfights.

The bulls used in the centuries-old fiesta can weigh up to at 1,380 pounds (625 kilograms) and have killed 15 people since record-keeping began in 1924.

"The first feeling while you're running is just surviving," said Rick Museca, 46, a wine importer from Miami. "I feel very fortunate that the people of Pamplona should share all this with us." Museca said he formed part of a Miami-based group of runners called Amigos de Pamplona, originally founded in 1983.

Due to the disorientation of the last bull, Sunday's run took four minutes and six seconds, a relatively long time. Every time the bull turned his head, runners scattered, tripped and fell as they tried to get away despite being hemmed in by the narrow streets.

Britain's Labour leader seeks to limit damage from union row

By William James

LONDON (Reuters) - The leader of Britain's opposition said he wanted to 'mend, not end' Labour's links to trade unions on Sunday in a bid to limit the damage from a row over outside influence.

Two years ahead of an election, the row has put the Labour party and Ed Miliband under pressure and handed some political momentum back to the ruling Conservative Party, which has been struggling with its own divisions and flagging in opinion polls.

Britain's biggest union, Unite, has been accused of hijacking the selection of a candidate to contest a parliamentary seat in the Scottish town of Falkirk to boost its influence in government. Unite said it operated within Labour's rules.

"The events we have seen in Falkirk have betrayed the values of our party," Miliband wrote in Sunday's Observer paper, while stressing that "ordinary working people" were an asset to Labour and that links to the unions would remain.

"We should mend the relationship, not end it," he said.

On Friday, Labour said it had handed evidence to police investigators supporting allegations of malpractice at Falkirk.

The incident has put Labour's long-standing links with unions, who are the party's biggest source of funding, in the spotlight and on Thursday prompted Miliband's election coordinator, Tom Watson, to resign that position.

"It is at heart an ideological battle, a political battle between those who want to take Labour back to the 70s and 80s... and those like Ed Miliband who want to see us move increasingly towards an open party," said former Labour Cabinet minister John Reid in an interview with the BBC.

The row has galvanised the ruling Conservative party which, only weeks ago, had looked weakened by disagreements on Britain's membership of the European Union. A vote on the European Union on Friday won overwhelming Conservative support.

"While Ed Miliband has been struggling to gain control of a Labour Party that's busy tearing itself apart, Conservatives have voted to give the public a say on our future in Europe," said Conservative Party Chairman Grant Shapps.

Labour have led the Conservatives in the polls during an economic slump, but Miliband's personal ratings have been weaker than the prime minister's or those of Tony Blair, who won three elections for Labour.

Vita Enjoys Third Biggest Week In Japan, Trounces Wii U

The PlayStation Vita has struggled since its launch, but it may be showing signs of life. Well, in Japan, at least.

According to a Yahoo! News report, Sony's portable got a big boost during the week ending June 30; it was actually the "third biggest smash of its life cycle so far."

This was due in part to the release of a game called Toukiden, which sold a surprising 127,000 units in its first week of availability. This allowed Vita sales to more than double, rising from just 14,000 to 34,000. The cool part is that the game in question wasn't expected to sell quite that well, especially with such a lack of marketing support. The Vita still can't beat the 3DS but it came close with that big week; Nintendo's handheld sold 45,000 when the Vita sold 34,000. Will there finally be some competition...?

As for the Wii U, it's floundering badly, selling only 5,800 that same week in question. Of course, Japan has proven to be a portable-loving market, as handhelds now own 74% of the total console market, which most certainly is not the case in the US. But anyway, wouldn't it be nice to see the Vita come up a bit? It's a darn fine system, ya know.

Police Disperse Taksim Square Protesters With Tear Gas After Governor Warns Demonstrations Are Illegal

ISTANBUL ? Police on Saturday fired volleys of tear gas at protesters who had gathered at the city's landmark Taksim Square with the intention of entering a park which has been cordoned off, hours after the city's governor warned that the demonstration was illegal and participants would be dispersed.

A few thousand people converged on the square, with the aim of entering the nearby Gezi Park, whose redevelopment plans sparked anger and morphed into nationwide anti-government protests in June. Organizers had planned to serve notice to authorities of a court decision that has annulled redevelopment plans for Taksim and break through police cordons.

The park has been cordoned off since June 15, when police routed environmentalists who occupied it amid the widespread demonstrations against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. His opponents say he has become increasingly authoritarian since coming to power a decade ago.

The nationwide protests have largely dwindled although thousands of demonstrators have been gathering at Taksim every Saturday for the past three weeks, demanding justice for a protester who was killed by police fire.

This time, some protesters argued with police standing guard at the entrance of Gezi Park. Police then pushed protesters away from the square with pressurized water and tear gas. They also chased protesters down two main streets off Taksim, firing tear gas.

An Istanbul court in June rule against the redevelopment plans that included building a replica Ottoman-era barracks at Gezi. The court's decision however, is not final and is expected to be appealed at a higher administrative court.

Istanbul Gov. Huseyin Avni Mutlu had warned that the protest aimed at entering Gezi was unauthorized and said police would intervene. He also said authorities planned to reopen the park on Sunday or Monday.

Earlier, police also dispersed a small group of demonstrators who squirted water at each other at the square, in a passive form of protest to poke fun at police's abundant use of water cannon throughout the anti-government protests. Police used shields to shove the protesters off Taksim.

Relationship Tips For A Happy Marriage Part 8: Stop Being ...

The Old Adage Is True (well, kind of)
There?s an old saying in Hollywood I?m sure you?ve heard that goes something like this, ?Be anything but boring.? The same is kind of true for marriage. A boring marriage puts your relationship at risk. One of the best relationship tips for a happy marriage I can give you is this: Don?t be predictable.

A Common Marriage Problem
In my work with marriages, one of the most common problems I hear from couples whose relationships are falling apart, is that their marriage is predictable ? everything has become dull and boring.

What do you think happens when a marriage relationship becomes dull, boring and predictable? The spouses start searching for a little excitement ? and sometimes they think they?re finding it in the arms of another person.

Be Predictable AND Unpredictable
A healthy marriage requires both predictability and unpredictability. I know it sounds like I?m contradicting myself so let me explain.

The Good Side of Predictability
You and your spouse need to know that you can count on each other by being responsible and following through on your agreements and expectations. This is the good side of predictability. Feeling uncertain about whether your spouse will follow through or behave in a certain way can cause just as much damage to your marriage as a spouse who is too predictable. Make sense?

So don?t think of being ?predictable? as something that?s totally bad because it isn?t. Predictability can give a marriage the security, comfort and sense of certainty that it needs.

The Bad Side Of Predictability
Predictability harms a marriage when the partners are mindlessly going through the motions. Everyday is the same. There is no variety or surprise ? no spark. We all enjoy the lazy river ride at the amusement park but we also want to go down Thunder River where there are rapids, dips, drops, spins and spraying water. Why? Because it adds a little bit of excitement to the experience!

An Idea: Disturb Your Spouse?s Predictability
Since most marriages struggle with too much predictability instead of too much unpredictability, I?ll give you some ideas about how to disturb your spouse?s routine of predictability:

1) If your spouse spends a few hours each weekend watching sports, maybe you could make a party out of it and join them?? maybe invite some friends over.

2) If your spouse loves being outside tending their garden, then maybe you could buy a special plant for them ? maybe even help take of it together.

3) Maybe instead of watching the evening news, invite your spouse to take a sunset stroll with you.

4) During your sunset stroll with your spouse, maybe stop and give them a hug ? whisper I love you into their ear and kiss them softly on the lips, and then take their hand and keep walking.

Do The Unexpected
It doesn?t take much to spice up your marriage. Just keep this in mind: Every once-in-awhile, do the unexpected ? be just a little bit unpredictable ? because when you do, you start becoming mad about marriage again.

First Time Home Buyer Questions - Zillow Mortgage Advice

Me and my fianc? are planning on buying a home this year, possibly in the next couple months.

I am the only one working, and make around 60k. I plan on buying a home in the range of 200 - 225k. I have 20% to put down.

My questions are the following. Would anyone not recommend applying for the MCC tax credit? The cost for applying seems steep, but the tax benefit looks very beneficial.
?
Also, I want to take advantage of everything benefit I can. Kyhousing has a down payment program called Neighborhood Down payment Assistance Program. It is a secondary mortgage, up to 10k, paying back at 1% for 30 years (10k taken away from the primary mortgage at 4% would save money by paying it back at 1%). Although I have a good down payment saved, I meet all the requirements listed on http://www.kyhousing.org/page.aspx?id=297.

I feel a little odd asking a mortgage professional about this program, as I do have a down payment saved up. Has anyone had any experience with one of these programs / had people apply for them who have a down payment saved up?

Thanks,

Boxee Cloud DVR to shut down following Samsung deal, goes dark July 10th

Boxee Cloud DVR, RIP

If you're like us, you were wondering what impact Samsung's acquisition of Boxee would have on Boxee's Cloud DVR service. Unfortunately, we don't have good news. Boxee is shutting down the service on July 10th, and customers will lose access to their TV recordings at the same time. We're not surprised by the move, but it effectively shuts the company down within the space of a week. When Boxee's apps, the Boxee Box and the Live TV add-on are either gone or on their way out, there aren't really products left to offer -- it's all Samsung from here.

FCC set to approve Softbank's Sprint and Clearwire deals, says Bloomberg

It looks as if nine months of hard politicking is coming to an end, now that the FCC has reportedly rubber-stamped the deal to tie up Softbank with Sprint and Clearwire. Bloomberg's cabal of insiders have said that two out of three commissioners have voted to support the transactions, meaning that Dan Hesse and Masayoshi Son should soon start cracking open the champagne and cigars. Now that the pair have charmed shareholders, convinced the Justice Department and bloodied Joseph Clayton's nose, all that's left to do is tell John J Legere that his services are no longer needed.

Mavericks preview: iBooks

Mavericks preview: iBooks

Available for iOS since the iPad was introduced in 2010, iBooks is finally coming to the Mac with OS X Mavericks. iBooks for Mac sports some features that will make it a winner especially for students with Macs.

Apple's ebook reader software, iBooks, was first introduced when the iPad debuted in April 2010 and later became available for other iOS devices with iOS 4's release. It's never been essential software - Apple offers it as an optional free download from the App Store rather than including it with every shipping iOS device - but it's an obvious killer app, especially for the iPad. And now, with OS X Mavericks, we'll finally get it for the Mac.

Here's what Apple has to say about iBooks for Mavericks:

Now the books you?ve already downloaded on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch will automatically appear in iBooks on your Mac. And there are over 1.8 million more in the iBooks Store, ready for you to download with just a few clicks. Reading books is every bit as intuitive as it is on an iOS device ? turn pages with a swipe, zoom in on images with a pinch, or scroll from cover to cover.

All of the features you're already familiar with from iBooks are present: you can search, you can bookmark pages, adjust font and type size, even switch page color from white to sepia or to night mode, which inverts the color scheme to white type on black pages (less intrusive if you're lying in bed next to someone who's trying to sleep). There's also a scrolling function if you'd prefer not to have to manually flip pages using the mouse, trackpad or keyboard.

WWDC 2013 keynote iBooks preview

So far, iBooks in Mavericks sounds identical to its iOS equivalent, but there are some important differences that will make it a great tool for students and researchers. You can have multiple books open simultaneously, for example. Need to compare or contrast source material from two different textbooks? No problem.

Mavericks' iBooks lets you highlight passages and attach notes - a feature you can find in the iOS version too - but rather than burying the notes as popups that run in the margin of the book, a Notes pane that runs along one side of the page. This makes it much easier to refer to notes you've added or attached as parts of highlighted sections.

WWDC 2013 keynote iBooks notes

iBooks will also sync with its iOS counterpart, so any books you purchase from your Mac (or your iOS device) will appear on other devices. And you're able to import PDFs and ePub books, just as you can with the iOS version.

iBooks for Mavericks is a very welcome - and some would say overdue - addition to OS X. It provides all the functionality of iBooks we've come to expect since its debut in 2010, and smartly extends its capability to make better use of the Mac, complementing what's already there in iOS. Check out more resources below, and let me know what you think - is iBooks in Mavericks what you were expecting, or were you hoping for more? Or is it so overdue that you don't care anymore?
