Player retracts after making steroids accusation

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:57 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) -Former CSKA Moscow midfielder Daniel Carvalho has apologized and retracted allegations he was made to take anabolic steroids while playing for the Russian club early in his career.

Carvalho, now with Brazilian club Palmeiras, told a local radio station Monday he was given anabolic steroids to improve his physical condition because he was "too skinny" when he arrived at the Moscow club in 2003.

Hours later, after his interview made headlines across the world, Carvalho released a statement saying he didn't know if the substance in the injections he received was actually an anabolic steroid.

The 28-year-old Brazilian said: "If it wasn't, I apologize to the Russians for the badly used words."

Prostate Cancer Target Analyzed | January 30, 2012 Issue - Vol. 90 ...

To understand better how two new anticancer agents work, researchers have obtained the first X-ray structures of a key cytochrome P450 enzyme to which they bind. Understanding how the drugs inhibit the enzyme could aid the design of more effective medications for prostate and breast cancer with fewer side effects.

Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) is found in cell membranes in the human reproductive tract and adrenal gland, where it catalyzes sequential hydroxylase and lyase reactions in the biosynthesis of testosterone and other sex hormones. The approved Janssen Biotech drug abiraterone (Zytiga) and the Tokai Pharmaceuticals agent TOK-001 (Galeterone), which is in clinical trials, are prostate cancer treatments that work by inhibiting both the enzyme?s lyase activity, accounting for most of their efficacy, and its hydroxylase activity, which causes side effects.

Emily E. Scott, an associate professor of medicinal chemistry, and Natasha M. DeVore at the University of Kansas have obtained X-ray structures by getting CYP17A1 to crystallize with each of these drugs bound (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature10743).

The structures reveal that the drugs bind to the enzyme in a manner far different from what scientists expected. Modeling studies had suggested the drugs would orient parallel to the plane of the enzyme?s active-site heme group; instead, the drugs are nearly perpendicular to it.

Other P450 enzymes have been analyzed structurally, says cytochrome P450 specialist Paul Ortiz de Montellano of the University of California, San Francisco. But the new structures are ?particularly important? in the search for prostate and breast cancer drugs with fewer side effects. For instance, they could lead to medications highly selective for CYP17A1, one of 57 similar P450 enzymes found in humans.

Scott says her group is collaborating with that of University of Kansas synthetic chemist Jeffrey Aub? ?to design new compounds we hope will be more-selective drugs??by inhibiting the enzyme?s lyase but not its hydroxylase activity, for example.

(AP) ? Egypt's Foreign Ministry said Sunday it has ended a contract with three Washington lobbying firms to cut expenses, denying reports that the Americans were the ones to sever the contract.

The rupture occurred as Cairo faces criticism from Washington for banning at least 10 Americans and Europeans from leaving the country as part of an investigation into foreign-funded civil society organizations. Among those barred was Sam LaHood of the U.S.-based International Republican Institute, who is the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The ban sparked anger in the United States, and Washington warned on Tuesday that the campaign raised concerns about Egypt's transition to democracy and could jeopardize American aid that Egypt's battered economy needs badly after a year of political and social unrest.

The travel ban was part of an Egyptian criminal investigation into foreign-funded democracy organizations after soldiers raided the offices of 10 such groups last month, including the IRI and its sister organization, the National Democratic Institute, as well as several Egyptian organizations.

Both the IRI and the NDI, linked to the Republican and Democratic parties, monitored Egypt's recent parliamentary elections.

The Egyptian investigation is closely linked with the political turmoil that has engulfed the country since the fall of Hosni Mubarak nearly a year ago. The generals who took power after Mubarak's fall have accused "foreign hands" of being behind protests against their rule, and they frequently depict the protesters themselves as receiving foreign funds in a plot to destabilize the country.

The December raids have drew sharp U.S. criticism, and President Barack Obama has spoken by telephone with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the head of the ruling military council, to emphasize "the role that these organizations can play in civil society," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry's statement was issued two days after Politico reported that former Republican Rep. Bob Livingston, former Democratic Rep. Toby Moffett and longtime lobbyist Tony Podesta ended their contract with the Egyptian government.

The lobbyists confirmed in a statement Saturday that they were immediately terminating their four-year relationship with the Egyptian government.

"We hope that Egyptians continue to enjoy the deepening of democracy in their country, and that Egypt remains a strong, stable and vital ally of the United States," the three lobbyists said in a joint statement.

Politico reported earlier that the firms came under criticism after circulating talking points justifying Egyptian security forces' raids on a number of NGOs including American groups.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Egypt's Defense Ministry has arrived in New York, Egypt's state news agency reported.

MENA quoted military attache Gen. Mohammed el-Kishki as saying that the visit was aimed at discussing "cooperation between the two countries in military affairs."

Egypt's army, which took power after the February 2011 ouster of Hosni Mubarak, receives 1.3 billion dollars a year in U.S. foreign assistance.

The country's aid package has come under pressure by members of Congress who want assurances that Egypt will abide by a 1979 peace treaty with Israel, and that the military rulers will respect democratic freedoms.

Company turns to bribery for 5 star Amazon reviews

In a world where word of mouth and the judgment of the hive mind is worth more than any ad or the ruminations of many professional reviewers, companies will do just about anything to ensure a strong rating on outlets like Amazon. It's clear that dummy accounts simply aren't the way to go, but what about bribing your existing customers? Apparently VIP Deals thought that route was perfectly acceptable and offered rebates to people who rated their products on Amazon. Now, the offer letter (which you can see at the more coverage link) doesn't explicitly ask for a five star review, but it is strongly suggested that the company expects one in exchange for receiving the product for free -- in this case, a leather Kindle Fire case. VIP's reviews and its products have all since been booted from Amazon, but it certainly raises plenty of questions about the ease with which some companies are able to game the system and how a reputable outlet can protect its customers from ratings scams. Hit up the source for the full story.

(AP) ? Hundreds of Etta James' friends, fans and family gathered Saturday at a Los Angeles-area church to remember the legendary rhythm and blues singer, who died this month.

Mourners at James' funeral included entertainment luminaries, with both Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera performing. Aguilera sang the song that James made famous, "At Last," while Wonder performed with the church's choir.

The Rev. Al Sharpton was to deliver the eulogy.

James died Jan. 20 at age 73 after battling leukemia and other ailments. She was most famous for her rendition of "At Last," and in her decades-long career, she became revered for her passionate, soulful singing voice. Her version of the song has become an enduring anthem for weddings and commercials.

Perhaps most famously, President Barack Obama and the first lady danced to a version of the song at his inauguration ball.

"Etta James was a pioneer. Her ever-changing sound has influenced rock and roll, rhythm and blues, pop, soul and jazz artists, marking her place as one of the most important female artists of our time," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Terry Stewart said after her death.

James won four Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement honor and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

She scored her first hit when she was just a teenager with the suggestive "Roll With Me, Henry," which had to be changed to "The Wallflower" in order to get airplay. Her 1967 album, "Tell Mama," became one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time, a mix of rock and gospel music.

Over her lifetime, James battled adversity, including a turbulent upbringing and drug addiction.

She rebounded from a heroin addiction to see her career surge after performing the national anthem at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. She won her first Grammy Award a decade later, and two more in 2003 and 2004.

She is also an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

James is survived by her husband and two sons.

Fire badly damages 19th century church in Ukraine (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Emergency officials say a fire has badly damaged a 19th-century Orthodox church in southern Ukraine, including collapsing its dome.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire at the landmark Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in the town of Bolhrad outside the Black Sea port of Odessa broke out Thursday during renovation work, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website.

The church's dome collapsed before the fire was put out.

Officials say the fire could have been caused by a violation of safety rules during the renovation.

Obama admin says new forest rules stress science (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration says new rules to manage nearly 200 million acres of national forests will protect watersheds and wildlife while promoting uses ranging from recreation to logging.

The new rules, to replace guidelines thrown out by a federal court in 2009, are set to take effect in early March. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the rule change on Thursday.

Vilsack said in an interview that the rules reflect more than 300,000 comments received since a draft plan was released last year. The new rules strengthen a requirement that decisions be based on the best available science and recognize that forests are used for a variety of purposes, Vilsack said.

"I think it's a solid rule and done in a collaborative, open and transparent way," he said.

The guidelines, known as a forest planning rule, will encourage forest restoration and watershed protection while creating opportunities for the timber industry and those who use the forest for recreation, he said.

Vilsack, who has pledged to break through the logjam of political conflict over forest management, said the new regulation's emphasis on science and multiple uses should allow it to stand up to likely court challenges from environmental groups or the timber industry.

"I am hopeful and confident that it will stand scrutiny," he said.

Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said the guidelines would allow land management plans for individual forests to be completed more quickly and at a lower cost than under current rules, which date to the Reagan administration.

Several attempts to revise the 1982 planning rule have been thrown out by federal courts in the past decade. Most recently a Bush administration plan was struck down in 2009. Environmentalists had fought the rule, saying it rolled back key forest protections.

The Obama administration did not appeal the ruling, electing to develop a new forest planning rule to protect water, climate and wildlife.

Under the new rule, forest plans could be developed within three to four years instead of taking up to seven years, as under current guidelines, Tidwell said.

"We really can protect the forest at lower cost with less time," he said.

The new regulation also should give forest managers more flexibility to address conditions on the ground, such as projects to thin the forest to reduce the risk of wildfire, Tidwell said.

"We'll be able to get more work done ? get more out of the forest and create more jobs," while at the same allowing greater recreational use, Tidwell said. Recreational use of the forest has grown exponentially in recent years.

Like Vilsack, Tidwell said he is optimistic the new plan will stand up to scrutiny from environmental groups and the timber industry, both of which have challenged previous planning rules in court.

"I'm optimistic that folks will want to give it a shot," Tidwell said.

The 155 national forests and grasslands managed by the Forest Service cover 193 million acres in 42 states and Puerto Rico. Balance between industry and conservation in those areas has been tough to find since the existing rules went into effect three decades ago.

At least three revisions of the rules have been struck down since 2000.

The planning rule designates certain animal species that must be protected to ensure ecosystems are healthy. However, the rule became the basis of numerous lawsuits that sharply cut back logging to protect habitat for fish and wildlife.

Meanwhile, the timber industry has continued to clamor for more logs, and conservation groups keep challenging timber sales, drilling and mining projects.

Tom Partin, president of the American Forest Resource Council, a timber industry group, said his members will review the final rule to see if it follows a federal rule to manage forests for a diversity of plants and animals ? not in a manner that places a single use or species above all else.

Jane Danowitz, U.S. public lands director for the Pew Environment Group, said national forests are the source of drinking water for one in three Americans, are home to fish and other wildlife and are an economic engine for local communities across the West.

"Faced with unprecedented threats from industrial development, these national forests need strong national protections," she said, adding that the new framework for forest management appears to reflect comments from scientists, the business community and conservation advocates.

"The plan now has stronger safeguards than what was originally proposed. That said, the true test of this plan will be how it's implemented on the ground," Danowitz said.

Kids' health predicts parents' future heart disease: study (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? When children have high cholesterol or blood pressure, their parents may have increased risks of diabetes and heart disease down the road, a new study finds.

The study, of 519 Ohio families, found that a 12-year-old's weight, cholesterol and blood pressure helped predict the odds of a parent developing heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes over the next three decades.

Researchers say the findings suggest that screening kids could have the "bonus" of spotting at-risk parents.

"Pediatric risk factors -- cholesterol, triglycerides, high blood pressure -- identified families where parents were at increased risk," said Dr. Charles J. Glueck of Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati, one of the researchers on the study.

One reason that's important, he told Reuters Health, is that many parents may not get check-ups themselves, but will regularly take their kids to the doctor.

However, not everyone agrees that children should have numerous screening tests.

It's standard for children to have their weight and blood pressure measured at "well-child" visits to the pediatrician. But only recently did experts start recommending cholesterol checks.

In November, the U.S. National Institutes of Health issued new guidelines saying children should have their cholesterol measured between the ages of 9 and 11, and again between the ages of 17 and 21. The American Academy of Pediatrics also endorsed the recommendation.

That was a shift from what experts had traditionally recommended -- namely, screening cholesterol only in certain at-risk kids, like those with diabetes or a family history of early heart disease.

And some critics questioned the new guidelines, pointing out that there's no hard data showing that screening kids' cholesterol helps their heart health in the long run.

In 2007, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) -- an expert panel with federal support -- said there was "insufficient" evidence to recommend for or against routine cholesterol tests for children and teenagers.

"There is still a lot of debate going on," Glueck said.

But he thinks the current study, plus another recent analysis of the same group, give some needed information. "Our findings provide some hard data: If you know children's risk factors, what does that tell you? It tells you a lot," Glueck said.

HEART DISEASE, STROKE, DIABETES

The study, reported in the Journal of Pediatrics, included 852 school students who, at an average age of 12, had their cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides and weight measured. They were reassessed 26 years later -- as were their parents, who were 66 years old, on average.

In nearly half of the families -- 47 percent -- a parent had suffered a heart attack, stroke or needed a procedure to clear blocked heart arteries by the end of the study period. In 37 percent, a parent had developed diabetes.

Overall, Glueck's team found, parents were about twice as likely to suffer early heart disease or stroke (age 60 or younger) when their child had had high blood pressure at age 12.

Parents' odds of cardiovascular problems at any age were also higher when their child had had high levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol or triglycerides.

And when children were overweight, their parents' odds of developing diabetes or high blood pressure doubled.

In an earlier study, Glueck's team had found that childhood test results also predicted the kids' own risks of developing heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure by their late-30s.

All of that suggests that childhood screenings can help predict future risks -- in kids and parents. But there is no hard evidence that screening children actually cuts their odds of diabetes or cardiovascular disease in the long run.

STUDY UNLIKELY

To pin that down, Glueck noted, researchers would have to follow a large group of screened children for decades into adulthood, and compare them to a group who'd been randomly assigned to forgo screening as kids.

"It's very unlikely a study like that would ever be done," Glueck said.

There's also a question of expense, since the cost of screening all children for high cholesterol adds up, for an uncertain benefit. And if a child were to be put on a cholesterol-lowering statin, no one is sure what the potential side effects of early and long-term use might be.

That's one reason the USPSTF did not come down on the side of universal screening.

According to Glueck, most children with high cholesterol could be treated with a healthier diet. It's estimated that about 15 to 20 children out of every 300 U.S. kids may have high cholesterol that's related to diet and lifestyle.

A smaller proportion -- about one in every 300 to 500 children -- have an inherited form of high cholesterol called familial hypercholesterolemia. That causes high LDL levels starting early in life, and often leads to heart disease by the time a person is in his 40s or 50s.

Those kids may be placed on statins.

Cockfighting: Feds should butt out, defendants argue

Courtesy the Humane Society of the United States

A photo from the Humane Society shows the aftermath of a South Carolina cockfighting bust in June 2010. South Carolina is among the states with lax laws against cockfighting, animal-welfare officials say.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

In a state that's home to a university whose mascot is a gamecock,?a?group of South Carolinians arrested in a major cockfighting case want an appeals court to throw out their federal convictions. They argue that the federal government has no business regulating bird fights within state borders.

In a case closely watched by animal-rights activists, a three-judge U.S. appeals court in Richmond, Va., on Tuesday heard arguments on whether federal prosecutors overstepped their?authority in trying six people in connection with Lexington County cockfights in 2008.

The four men and two women were found guilty at a federal court trial in May 2010 of violating animal welfare laws? -- the same laws that were used to prosecute star NFL quarterback Michael Vick and send him to federal prison?in 2007?for organizing dogfights at his Virginia home.

During the South Carolina trial, prosecutors showed video secretly shot by a?state Department of Natural Resources agent who went undercover to infiltrate the cockfights at an?arena in the rural Lexington County town of Swansea.

The federal government brought in witnesses from out of state -- and even flew in one witness from England?-- to prove their case that the defendants were involved in interstate commerce --?which would give the federal government jurisdiction.

The six are appealing their convictions, and the outcome could also affect several others who pleaded guilty and didn?t go to trial.

Rauch Wise, an attorney for the defendants, says the federal government should not be in the business of regulating what essentially is a state matter.

In South Carolina, cockfighting is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail, though many violators often get off with a fine. Under the federal law, violators face up to five years in prison, Wise noted.

The defendants got sentences ranging from three years probation to 21 months in prison.

?Congress does not have right to prohibit burglary simply because someone steals a TV that was made out of state,? Wise told msnbc.com in a telephone interview Tuesday after arguing the case before the appellate panel. ?Those are state matters reserved to the state and should be handled by state.

?They?ve taken laws in various states that citizens in those states have passed and in essence are saying, ?you?re not being tough enough.??

In an accompanying?court filing, Wise argued the case did not involve interstate commerce. "Under the theory used by the Government in this case, Congress would have the power to make littering in a state a (federal) crime."

Nathan Williams, the assistant U.S. attorney who argued?for the?government, said the federal law prohibiting animal fighting was a proper exercise of congressional power under the Interstate Commerce Clause.

In?court documents, the government outlines several reasons why the case involved ?interstate commerce.? Prosecutors noted that several items, including leg bands, call slips for recordkeeping, vitamins, a syringe and a scale, were shipped from outside South Carolina?to people present at the cockfights.

Citing a previous ruling in another animal-fighting case, Williams argued:

?Whether or not the knives, gaffs or other instrumentalities themselves substantially affect interstate commerce is not the relevant question. The fact that these instruments are used in an animal fighting venture that affects interstate commerce is sufficient to permit Congress to criminalize the selling, buying, transporting or delivering of them pursuant to its power under the Commerce Clause.?

Cockfighting is a centuries-old blood sport in which two or more specially bred roosters are placed in an enclosed pit to fight, often to the death. The University of South Carolina?s men?s sports teams have traditionally been called the Fighting Gamecocks.

The Humane Society of the United States is trying to make cockfighting a felony in all 50 states. John Goodwin, director of animal cruelty policy for the organization, who attended the appeals hearing, says it?s clear that the South Carolina case stretched beyond state borders.

?This is not just a matter of two chickens pecking each other in the back of some farmyard. These are large-scale events that affect interstate commerce in a pretty significant way,? he told msnbc.com

Goodwin said there have been about a dozen prosecutions under the federal Animal Welfare Act in the past seven or eight years, at least half of which involved cockfighting. He couldn?t recall any previous cases that reached a federal appeals court.

?Hopefully he judges will agree that the? law that was used to prosecute Michal Vick is a good law that would stand,? Goodwin said.

Wise said he expects a ruling from the appellate panel within 90 days.

?The significance of this case is what limit there is on the power of Congress to essentially regulate what is a state matter, cockfighting,? he said.

Apple announces Q1 earnings, sets quarterly record with $46.33 billion in revenue

Apple Store Grand Central
It's that time folks: time for the quarterly running of the spreadsheets. Today Apple, one the most anticipated of all, is revealing its earnings for the past three months and let's just say things are lookin' pretty good for the Cupertino crew. The company set a new record for quarterly revenue and profit in Q1 of 2012, netting $46.33 billion in total with $13.06 billion earnings -- the latter number representing about half of the company's annual profit. That's nearly twice what Apple announced for the same (at the time record-setting) period last year -- $26.74 billion and $6 billion, respectively. In total the company shipped 15.4 million iPads, 15.4 million iPods and 5.2 million Macs this quarter. That last number is particularly surprising since it represents a growth of 26 percent over last year, bucking trends that indicated PC growth would remain flat.

Perhaps more importantly, though, the company sold just over 37 million iPhones -- a 128 percent increase over the same quarter last year and greatly exceeding industry estimates. This also moves Apple back into the number one slot, ahead of Samsung which sold a stunning 35 million units this last quarter. Sales of iPhones and accessories accounted for 24.4 billion of the quarter's revenue. Apple also anticipates to have a strong Q2, though maybe not a record-breaking one, thanks to "some amazing new products in the pipeline." But even if Q2 turns out to be a slow one, Cupertino should be perfectly fine thanks to its $97 billion in cash on hand. Check out the complete PR after the break.

IMF warns that Europe poses global recession threat (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The euro zone debt crisis is escalating and could derail the global economic recovery, the International Monetary Fund warned on Tuesday as it called for urgent action to restore confidence.

The IMF chopped its 2012 forecast for global growth to 3.3 percent from 4 percent just three months ago, saying the outlook had deteriorated in most regions. It projected world growth would strengthen to 3.9 percent in 2013.

However, it warned that growth this year would come in about 2 percentage points lower if Europe let the crisis fester.

"The world recovery, which was weak in the first place, is in danger of stalling," IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard said at a news conference. "The world could be plunged into another recession" if the European crisis intensifies, he added.

While the Washington-based lender said global activity was decelerating, not collapsing, it said the 17-nation euro zone would likely slip into a mild recession this year, with output contracting by about 0.5 percent.

"The most immediate policy challenge is to restore confidence and put an end to the crisis in the euro area by supporting growth while sustaining adjustment, containing deleveraging, and providing more liquidity and monetary accommodation," the IMF said in its latest World Economic Outlook report.

The IMF maintained its 1.8 percent growth forecast for the United States in 2012, but cut its projection for Japan to 1.7 percent from 2.3 percent in September.

It said economic activity in advanced economies would expand by 1.5 percent on average in 2012 and 2013, too sluggish to make a major dent in high unemployment rates.

SUPPORT FOR GROWTH NEEDED

The IMF said the United States and other advanced economies would likely not escape unharmed if Europe's crisis escalated further.

Talks between private bond holders and the Greek government have foundered, raising the risk Athens could face a messy default that would touch off a deeper crisis. IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has called on Europe to bolster its rescue funds to erect a wall against financial contagion.

"The United States and other advanced economies are susceptible to spillovers from a potential intensification of the euro zone crisis, and have homegrown challenges ... including overcoming political obstacles," the IMF said.

The fund projected a sharp slowdown in the pace of growth in emerging and developing countries and urged them to focus policies to stimulate their economies.

It now projects growth in emerging economies to reach 5.4 percent in 2012, down from the 6.1 percent it forecast in September. It cut China's growth figure to 8.2 percent for 2012, down from 9.0 percent. Chinese growth should rebound to 8.8 percent in 2013, it added.

For fast-growing emerging Asia as a whole, the IMF reduced its growth outlook for 2012 to 7.3 percent from 8 percent.

Elsewhere, the IMF said growth in the Middle East and North Africa should accelerate, driven mainly by a recovery in Libya after a nine-month civil war ended with the capture and killing of leader Muammar Gaddafi in October.

The IMF said global oil prices would likely only ease slightly in 2012 despite slowing world growth. The Fund said its baseline oil price projection was broadly unchanged since September when it forecast $100 a barrel.

Non-oil commodity prices are set to fall by 14 percent this year, the IMF said, adding that risks to prices are to the downside for most commodities.

In Africa, the global slowdown is likely to be limited to South Africa, with the region as a whole expanding by around 5.5 percent this year.

The largest impact of the slowdown would likely be felt in central and eastern Europe, which has strong trade links with the euro zone economies, the IMF said. It revised down its estimate for the region to 1.1 percent in 2012 from a previous forecast of 2.7 percent. Growth should edged up to 2.4 percent next year, the IMF added.

Gamers Redesign a Protein That Stumped Scientists for Years [Science]

Folding: it's detestable and boring, as any Gap employee can tell you. But it's also a totally fun thing you can do in a video game! And today it's particularly exciting because players of the online game Foldit have redesigned a protein, and their work is published in the science journal Nature Biotechnology. More »

Rapid Infant Growth Linked to Asthma in Study (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Jan. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Rapid growth during the first three months of life is associated with an increased risk of asthma symptoms in preschool children, a new study indicates.

The findings suggest that early infancy might be a critical period for the development of asthma, said the researchers at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands.

They examined data collected from 5,125 children who were followed from the fetal stage until they were 4 years old.

The researchers found no link between fetal growth and asthma symptoms. But in children with normal fetal growth, accelerated weight gain from birth to 3 months of age was associated with increased risk of asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough and persistent phlegm.

The study appears online ahead of print in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Previous research has shown an association between low birth weight and increased risk of asthma symptoms in children. This is the first study to examine specific fetal and infant growth patterns on asthma risk.

"Our results suggest that the relationship between infant weight gain and asthma symptoms is not due to the accelerated growth of fetal growth-restricted infants only," researcher Dr. Liesbeth Duijts said in a journal news release. "While the mechanisms underlying this relationship are unclear, accelerated weight growth in early life might adversely affect lung growth and might be associated with adverse changes in the immune system."

She added: "Further research is needed to replicate our findings and explore the mechanisms that contribute to the effects of growth acceleration in infancy on respiratory health. The effects of infant growth patterns on asthma phenotypes [observable characteristics] in later life should also be examined."

Ohio Exotic Animal Escape Case Closed (ContributorNetwork)

Ohio law enforcement officers are ready to close the exotic animals escape case, according to USA Today. The exotic pet release in Zanesville last fall prompted emergency animal habitat and care laws in the state.

The investigation report confirmed that exotic farm owner Terry Thompson released 56 dangerous wild animals before shooting himself and no foul play had occurred. Witness statements released in the report discussed Thompson's distraught state of mind because of an estrangement with his wife and a pending home confinement as dictated by the terms of his parole on weapons charges.

Thompson told a federal parole officer he was overwhelmed with the farm just days before releasing the wild animals.

Ohio exotic pet owners and breeders shared their thoughts on the case and new Ohio laws via email, instant messaging and Twitter.

* "If you lived near the Zanesville area you would understand why so many people support the stringent new dangerous animal ownership laws in Ohio. We had such lax laws before that anyone could own, breed and sell lions and tigers and bears. In the worst case scenario like we had here, the animals were housed in deplorable conditions without adherence to proper diet or natural habitat. It is far too dangerous to allow such things to go on. Would you want a bear breeder as a neighbor?" -- Teresa Harkins, dog breeder, Zanesville.

* "What Terry Thompson did should not negatively impact all of us who are responsible exotic animal breeders or owners. I understand the need for much stronger laws about their care, habitat and auctions, but not an outright ban. Boas are even on the list and they are no more dangerous than a German shepherd." -- Lynn Andrews, snake breeders, Marietta.

* "I have owned chimps for nearly 30 years and have never mistreated them or posed a danger to my neighbors. I am more than willing to take a species care examination and be monitored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. My enclosure is safe and as natural as it can be outside of a zoo. I guarantee you that I take better care of my chimps than those at circuses which operate in Ohio. Circuses, no matter how longstanding should not be automatically exempt." -- Dee Mason, chimp sanctuary, Port Clinton.

* "Ohioans can just as easily mistreat common domestic pets as they can reptiles. I can understand that exotics like bears and big cats need far more regulation, but venomous snakes have yet to ever cause a problem like the one that happened in Zanesville. Monitor and license breeders and owners and review the types of animals permitted on an individual basis and not just issue a blanket order." -- Ron Masters, reptile breeder, Mansfield.

* "My neighbors love my pets and know that I take extreme measures to house them safely and properly. I would welcome inspections and am willing to pay annual licensing fees. That depressed man who shot himself in Zanseville is giving a bad name to all exotic pet owners and breeders and it is just not right. He killed himself with a gun bought from a sheriff's deputy who has a dealer's license. Maybe gun dealing laws should be looked at more closely as well. Zoos cannot always take care of the casually discarded animals former owners let go. Small non-profit refuges and breeders often do a lot of for species with dwindling numbers." -- Lucinda Conrad, former big cat owner, Canton.

Police: Conn. school pool drowning was accident (AP)

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. ? Police say a Connecticut teen who drowned in his school's swimming pool was participating in a supervised swim class when someone found him unconscious in the deep end.

East Hartford police say 15-year-old Marcum Asiamah's (AH'-she-mahz) death is being classified as accidental. The investigation continues.

Asiamah was pulled from the water at East Hartford High School on Jan. 11. A bystander performed CPR, but the teen was pronounced dead at a hospital. An autopsy confirmed he drowned and also classified his death as accidental.

Police and school officials have not released details about the circumstances and how many people were near the pool, which remains closed during the investigation.

Asiamah's classmates held a vigil in his memory Friday night at the school, where he was a freshman.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Ricky Gervais, who is prone to ruffle feathers with sharp wisecracks aimed at celebrities, made an early arrival Sunday on the Golden Globes red carpet, along with such stars as George Clooney, Sarah Michelle Gellar and the dog from "The Artist."

Clooney, who come to the awards armed with nominations for two movies, was braced for the tart-tongued Gervais, who will once again be host. "I find him very funny and I think he'll probably tee off on everybody," Clooney said.

The Globes have equally good comedy and drama masks this year. Alongside heavyweight dramas, the category for best musical or comedy at the Globes usually is more of a lark, with nominees rarely emerging with best-picture prospects for Hollywood's top prize, the Academy Awards.

Yet Sunday's musical or comedy contenders make up a strong bunch that could give their best-drama cousins at the Globes a run for their money come Oscar time.

Expected to make the most noise at the Globes ceremony, to be carried live on NBC from 8-11 p.m. EST, is the silent film "The Artist," with six nominations, including best musical or comedy, directing and writing honors for Michel Hazanavicius, and acting slots for Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Tied for second with five nominations each are the Deep South tale "The Help" and Clooney's Hawaiian family story "The Descendants," both of them among best-drama contenders.

One of the stars Sunday arriving for the ceremony was definitely well-behaved and well-dressed ? Uggie the dog from "The Artist" did tricks on the red carpet: Standing up and rolling over to play dead. After one of the tricks, his handler adjusted his black bow tie.

With the Oscars choosing up to 10 best-picture contenders when nominations come out Jan. 24, "The Artist" could have some other lighter fare as company there. Globe musical or comedy nominees "Midnight in Paris" and "Bridesmaids" have solid Oscar nomination prospects, along with the weighty dramas academy voters historically prefer.

On the carpet, Sarah Michelle Gellar was spotted without husband Freddie Prinze Jr. "He's watching football," she told E! "This is the worst date night I could possibly think of." Nominee Sofia Vergara from "Modern Family" was in a Vera Wang gown and was asked why she liked the designer. "She sends me dresses that zip, and they close," she told E!

Red carpet interviews don't always involve words. "The Artist" actor James Cromwell was asked to describe how he felt about being at the Globe awards without talking. Wide-eyed and flashing a smile, he clapped his hands and looked skyward.

Most years, the musical or comedy category is filled with nominees that have little or no chance at the Oscars, such as last year's Globe nominees "The Tourist" and "Burlesque." The last time a musical or comedy Globe winner earned the best-picture Oscar was nine years ago, when "Chicago" triumphed at both shows.

This time, the dual categories at the Globes could create an Oscar showdown between the dramatic and musical-comedy winners.

Along with "The Artist," Kristen Wiig's wedding romp "Bridesmaids" and Woody Allen's romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," Globe nominees for best musical or comedy are Joseph Gordon-Levitt's cancer tale "50/50" and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe story "My Week With Marilyn."

Besides "The Descendants" and "The Help," best-drama contenders are Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo," Clooney's political thriller "The Ides of March," Brad Pitt's sports tale "Moneyball" and Steven Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse."

Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of 89 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets, the Globes used to have a strong record predicting the films that would go on to win best-picture at the Oscars. But lately, a best-picture win at the Globes has not translated into victory on Oscar night.

Over the last seven years, only one Globe best-picture winner ? 2008's "Slumdog Millionaire" ? has gone on to claim the top Oscar trophy. Before that stretch, the Globes had been on an eight-year streak in which one of its two best-picture recipients also won the main prize at the Academy Awards.

Last year, "The Social Network" won best-drama at the Globes and looked like the early Oscar favorite. But momentum later swung to eventual Oscar best-picture winner "The King's Speech." The year before, "Avatar" was named best drama at the Globes, while "The Hurt Locker" took best picture at the Oscars.

The Globes have a better track record predicting who will win Oscars for acting. A year ago, all four actors who won Oscars earned Globes first ? lead players Colin Firth for "The King's Speech" and Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" and "The Fighter" supporting stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.

This time, "The Help" leads the acting categories with three nominations, for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. Along with Clooney, Pitt and Williams, other nominees include Meryl Streep for the Margaret Thatcher story "The Iron Lady," Leonardo DiCaprio for the J. Edgar Hoover biography "J. Edgar," Christopher Plummer for the father-son tale "Beginners" and Glenn Close and Janet McTeer for the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs."

Ryan Gosling has two nominations, as dramatic actor for "The Ides of March" and actor in a musical or comedy for the romance "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Morgan Freeman will receive the Globes' Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at Sunday's Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony.

Gervais has returned to host the Globes for the third-straight time. If the caustic comedian decides to again bite the hand that feeds him, a case working its way through federal court in Los Angeles might provide some of his material: the HFPA is fighting for the right to dump longtime Globes broadcaster NBC if it can get a better deal with another network.
