China's data center market is expected to grow 20% a year over the next five years, and exceed $7 billion in annual investments, says a report released late Thursday.
Beijing is expected to be at the center of the expansion after seeing 45% growth in 2012, says the report prepared by DatacenterDynamics, an industry research firm and conference organizer. Data center growth over the rest of China rose 29%.
Total investments in China's data center market, including construction of new centers and expanding existing centers, will reach $7.5 billion for the 2012-2013 period, up from $5.9 billion in the previous 12 months, the report said.
Other cities in the region are catching up with Hong Kong in becoming more technologically efficient, says Nicola Hayes, managing director of DatacenterDynamics Intelligence, in the report.
Beijing and Shanghai are rapidly establishing themselves as data center hubs, Hayes said.
Data Center growth helps many tech vendors, including China-based Huawei and Silicon Valley's Cisco Systems (CSCO), the No. 1 maker of networking gear.
