The origins of Australian tattoos

There are many images that have been popular in Australian tattoos however the art of tattooing began in Australia back in the early 19th Century when the first European prisoners arrived in the colony. These convicts used the black sediment from oil lamps to etch symbols and messages on their skin, often choosing more concealed body parts for personal tattoos. Ironically, in the modern world of tattooing the placement is as important to most people as the design. Many of these early designs were highly decorative and featured images that reminded them of home such as monuments and landmarks, as well as lovers knots and triumphal arches and of course crocodiles and kangaroos from their exile.
